Music Group Classes for Adults
Repertory Ensemble @ Irvine
Formed in 2019, this flagship audition-only jazz group became the foundation for SoCal Jazz Academy. Meeting weekly and performing live every other week, the Repertory Ensemble tackles a challenging mix of jazz standards, modern arrangements, and improvisation. With varied instrumentation and a focus on tight ensemble work, members gain real-world band experience and represent our school at select performances. Led by Dr. Karim Yengsep, this is the top stage for serious young jazz musicians.
Improvisation Class @ Lake Forest
Led by legendary jazz pianist and composer Mark Massey, this class takes intermediate improvisers on a journey to discover the jazz language. Students will learn essential bebop vocabulary, develop their ear training skills, and gain the tools to become confident, expressive soloists. Through guided practice and interactive playing, you’ll strengthen your improvisation chops and deepen your connection to the music.
Jazz Standards Combo @ Lake Forest
Led by virtuoso first-call guitarist Ken Song, this combo explores the heart of the jazz tradition—classic standards from the Great American Songbook and beyond. Students learn not only the notes, but also the real-world skills to interpret these compositions in authentic performance settings. With a focus on listening, interaction, and improvisation, this class bridges the gap between the classroom and the bandstand.
Latin Jazz Combo @ Irvine
Add some fire to your playing. Our Latin Jazz Combo blends Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and modern Latin grooves with rich harmony, tight ensemble playing, and plenty of room to solo and explore. Under the direction of Maestro Mark Massey — acclaimed pianist, composer, and long-time SoCal jazz heavyweight — students learn authentic rhythmic feels, stylistic nuance, chart interpretation, and improvisation.
