Ian Rapien is a saxophonist, composer, and music educator whose career has spanned multiple continents and musical genres. A native of Southern California, Rapien earned a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music, where he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Music in Performance. He later completed his Master of Music in Jazz Performance at New York University while living and performing in Brooklyn.
During his time in New York City, Rapien immersed himself in the city’s vibrant music scene, performing across a wide range of styles. His versatility caught the attention of bassist and Snarky Puppy founder Michael League, who invited him to tour with the group and record on their landmark album Tell Your Friends (Ropeadope Records)—the band’s first live-in-the-studio project. In 2016, Rapien relocated to Lima, Peru, where he quickly became an integral part of the local jazz community.
He performed extensively throughout the country and led masterclasses in saxophone, jazz theory, and improvisation. His deep connection to the Peruvian music scene culminated in the 2024 release of The Fountain, an album of original compositions featuring some of Lima’s most prominent musicians, including Andrés Prado, Jonathan Purizaga, Mario Cuba, and Hugo Alcázar. The Fountain marked Rapien’s first release featuring an all-Peruvian lineup. In 2025, a companion live album—recorded at Lima’s premier jazz venue, the Jazz Zone—was also released. Both projects are accompanied by high-definition video and are available for streaming on all major platforms. (Both releases can be found on this website under "Album Releases.")
As a composer, Rapien draws on a wide spectrum of influences, blending the improvisational freedom of jazz with the harmonic sensibilities of pop and rock, the rhythmic complexity of South American music, and the formal beauty of classical composition. His style has been described by Jazziz Magazine as “a genre-defying fusion of Miles Davis, Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, and Dave Matthews Band.” In 2002, Rapien founded Spectral Awakenings, a forward-thinking ensemble designed to bridge the gap between traditional jazz and more contemporary idioms. The group has performed internationally in Singapore, Peru, Los Angeles, Boston, and New York City, and held a celebrated three-year residency at Manhattan’s iconic 55 Bar.
Now based in Orange County, California, Rapien continues to compose, record, and produce from his home studio. His latest projects have been independently mixed and mastered, showcasing his dedication to quality and creative control. He also serves as a dedicated instructor at Music Around in Lake Forest, where he leads the saxophone jazz combo, advanced woodwind lessons, and theory-driven instruction rooted in the fundamentals of jazz.
